agility 1 / Mondays @ 5:30pm
Instructor: Abby Christman; Assistant Maddie Ulinski
6 teams; 2 hours (includes equipment set up and clean up)
8 weeks; starts January 6
In this class, we will focus on safety and confidence building to create a solid foundation and set dogs up to be successful in their competitive agility careers. Dogs will be introduced to the different types of agility jumps (regular, double, triple, broad, panel), tunnels, table, and start learning 2 on/2 off end behavior on all three contacts (teeter, dog walk, A frame). Jump grids and other activities will be used to teach dogs to find and drive their line to the next obstacle, but sequencing will be kept to a minimum. Handler skills will focus on staying connected with the dog and properly rewarding the dog. Weaves will be mentioned, but not taught as a dedicated weave class is best to make progress.
Dogs are expected to be new to the sport, while handlers may be new or experienced. This class will be off-leash in a secure environment and dogs will be quietly crated when not working. Handlers will help set up and clean up equipment.
Students signing up for this class should plan to commit to both the January and March sessions to reach an intermediate level with the same instructors. Attendance and regular practice are important for success in this class.
Requirements:
Teams must meet both the class AND skill requirements for this class. The class prerequisites help ensure that teams have the necessary group class experience and have been introduced to most, if not all, of the required skills. However, the skills are much more important; Don’t assume that your team is proficient in the required skills because you meet one of the class prerequisite options!
The registrar will check to make sure that teams have the appropriate class prerequisites and students are asked to take a serious look at the skill requirements and be honest in their self-evaluation before registering for this class. The instructor may ask students to drop the class if they are not proficient in the required areas.
Class Prerequisites:
Handlers must be IDTC members and teams must meet ONE of the conditions below. Please use the flowchart to make sure that your team can check off all parts of the option you are selecting.

Class Prerequisites:
Handlers must be IDTC members and teams must meet ONE of the conditions below. Please use the flowchart to make sure that your team can check off all parts of the option you are selecting.
- Option 1: Dog and handler must have successfully completed the IDTC Foundations of Dog Sport Class (offered January 2024, March 2024, and September 2023).
- Option 2: Dog and handler must have successfully completed a Canine Good Citizen class AND passed the CGC test AND successfully completed a Fit Dog 2 class.
- Option 3: Dog and handler must have successfully completed a Canine Good Citizen class AND passed the CGC test AND successfully completed IDTC Fit Dog 1: Foundations of Dog Sport during the November 2024 session.
- Option 4: Dog and handler must have successfully completed a Canine Good Citizen class AND passed the CGC test AND successfully completed IDTC Foundation Agility: Jumping Skills during the November 2024 session.
- Option 5: Need to meet BOTH dog and handler requirements. Handler must have trained another dog to at least an intermediate agility level (CPE Level 3/AKC Open) AND dog must be working at at least a CGC level as evidenced by successfully completing a class and/or passing the CGC test. Additionally, the dog should have experience in a group class or similar setting.
- Option 6: Permission of instructor. If you feel that your team has completed classes and has training equivalent to the above as well as have the skills below, please contact the instructor to discuss in advance of registration.
Skill Requirements:
These skills are necessary to be successful in this class.
- Shaping: Teams need to be familiar with training new skills via shaping.
- Rear end awareness: Dogs must have worked on rear end awareness exercises such as pivot discs, backing up, putting front feet on an object, walking on a narrow plank or stepping through a ladder, and, most importantly, putting back feet on an object and maintaining the position (2o2o).
- Crating: Dogs need to be quietly crated while other dogs are running and handlers are learning.
- Control on- and off- leash: Dogs need to enter and exit the ring leashed and under control; excessive barking, running at gates, jumping on people, or other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
- Recall in an exciting environment: Dogs need to come when called in an exciting environment without interacting with equipment, visiting dogs or people, or excessive sniffing or zooming.
- Ability to work around other dogs: Dogs need to be comfortable and under control if another team is working in the ring (separated by low ring gating) at the same time and need to be calm while other dogs are working. Dogs need to be comfortable enough in this exciting environment to learn new skills off-leash, not to simply exist without causing problems.
- Confidence: Dogs need to be comfortable trying new things, offering behaviors, and not regularly shut down when stressed or confused. Being sensitive is absolutely ok, being unable to recover from a setback to learn is a problem.
- Refocus skills: Teams should have a repertoire of 5 to 10 “easy win” refocus skills to pull from, such as nose touch, spin in a circle, go between legs, paw/high five, jump up/high nose touch, sit, down, sit pretty, etc.
- A dog may be successful in this class with 9a and/or 9b. Ideally dogs will have both skills as we will use both in certain situations to help dogs learn agility skills.
- 9a. Stay: Dogs should have a solid stay, even in an exciting environment, around people and other dogs. This stay may be a sit, down, or stand. Handlers should be able to be precise in the location and direction that the dog is facing in the stay to line them up for obstacles.
- 9b. Able to be restrained by someone else: Dogs should be comfortable with someone (an instructor or other student) restraining them gently by the collar or around the chest.
