Instructor: Dave Grodsky, Assistant: Alison Sedler
6 teams; 1.5 hours; 7 weeks
Starts May 5, No class weeks of CPE trials
The May 5 class is required, and handlers will attend without their dogs.
Agility 1 is intended for dogs new to Agility. Handlers may be new to the sport or have experience with previous dogs. They must have fulfilled the club’s prerequisites and are assumed to be well socialized. To succeed in the course basic obedience skills are a must, especially sit/stay and recall. Dogs will be introduced to and learn to traverse the various equipment types, including jumps, tunnels, and contacts. Weave poles will be discussed but will not be introduced to the dogs. Handlers will be introduced to the general rules of Agility with a focus on CPE (the IDTC venue of choice) and will learn about the AKC and UKI venues, also available in our area. They will receive general instruction regarding how agility trials are run.
As safety is a priority in all dog sport (especially Agility, where running is involved) one dog will work in the ring at a time. Handlers must be diligent about ensuring that their dog does not interact or approach other dogs and is quietly crated while other dogs are working. No dog shall be off lead unless working in the ring with the gates closed. These are also practices that will be strictly adhered to at Agility trials. Dogs off-lead in the ring must always remain under the handler’s control. Excessive barking, reactive and other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Dog on dog aggression as determined by the instructor may result in immediate excusal from the remainder of the course without exception.
Students signing up for this class should plan to commit to both the May and July sessions to reach an intermediate level with the same instructors.

Fridays @ 5pm / Group Class prep for dogs with big feelings - FULL
Instructors: Jean Bonasera and Martha Goelzer
6 teams; 1hour; 7 weeks
Starts May 17
We will primarily work on exercises from Suzanne Clothier’s “Skills for Reactive Dogs” and Leslie McDevitt’s “Control Unleashed”. The first class will be a handlers only class, then for each of the 4 weeks following we will work with 1 of the four teams in the class. During each of those weeks new exercises will be introduced. The other handlers will observe and help with feedback of the working team and will also have a chance to practice the mechanics of new skills with one of our neutral dogs. On the 6th and 7th week, we will orchestrate having the 4 dog/handler teams together in the space and use distance and gating to help keep dogs under threshold as we work through skills together.
We will not be working with dogs that are aggressive to dogs or people. For this first session, we would like to focus on dogs that cannot dial down their excitement enough to work in a group class environment. Is your dog determined to meet every other dog? If yes, they would be a good candidate.
Please contact Jean (ausabledogs@yahoo.com) and Martha (megoelzer@gmail.com) if you have questions or are interested in participating.
Please note that IDTC is unable to accept aggressive or reactive dogs in our classes. If you are concerned that your dog is aggressive or reactive to people or other dogs, please ask your vet for a referral to a certified animal behaviorist.
