Obedience classes

Register with Marian Szebenyi, 176 Jackson Hollow, Newfield, NY 14867.

Applications (see Forms) will be accepted until 3 days before the start of classes, or until a class is full; include the fee ($85 as a first class, $70 as the second class with this dog, $20 for active members, $70 for inactive members), vaccination information, and the liability waiver. Saturdays - March 11, 18, 25; April 1, 8, 15, 22
10:00 A.M.  Puppy Beginner - Instructor Kathy Wolf, assisted by Jean Bonasera           *** Full ***

       This is a first class for puppies 3-6 months old. It covers manners and an introduction to basic obedience, as well as some socialization and fun activities. Successful completion of this course will enable your puppy to get the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate.

        For dogs 6 months and up with no previous formal training. Covers problem solving, attention, and basic obedience (sit, down, come, stay, walk on a leash).

Preparation for the role of therapy dog, in visits carried out by Cornell Companions.

     Build on training begun in Beginner I or Puppy Beginner to widen your dog's experience and improve reliability.

7:30 P.M.  Fit Dog - Instructor Becky Robinson                                                       *** Full ***

      There will be FIT DOG walks on weeks that there are club meetings.
This class is designed to expose dogs to a variety of exercise types including cardion flexibility, balance, and strength training. Learning new exercises will challenge the dogs mentally, build confidence, and enhance proprioception. At the end of class students can earn an AKC Fit Dog title.

Prerequisites: Members only. Dogs must be at least 1 year old, have completed Beginner II, understand the training game and be able to focus on tasks during class. Handlers must understand lure-based training and shaping. This is a class for healthy dogs.


Wednesdays - March 8, 15, 22, 29; April 5, 12, 19
5:00 P.M. Beginner I - Instructor Jean Bonasera, assisted by Claire Yager             *** Full ***
     
For dogs 6 months and up with no previous formal training. Covers problem solving, attention, basic obedience (sit, down, come, stay, walk on a leash).

     Build on training begun in Beginner I or Puppy Beginner to widen your dog's experience and improve reliability.

7:30 P.M.  Beyond Beginner I - Instructor Marty Gold                                   *** Full ***   
      This class is for recent graduates from Beginner I who need some time to solidify the exercises learned before moving on to Beginner II.


Thursdays - March 9, 16, 23, 30; April 6, 13, 20

       Preparation for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, which will be given at the end of this class. For IDTC members, as well as non-members who have completed Beginner II.

4:00 P.M. Obedience/Rally practice  Supervised by Susan Morse                      *** Full ***
        Opportunity to practice on your own, help each other. For members only, working at the Beginner Novice to beginning Open level. A ring will be set up; people will each have a chance to work individually in the ring. A group sit and down stay will be run at some point. Outside the ring there will be space to practice individual obedience/rally exercises; cones will be out for figure 8s, etc. 

5:30 P.M. Proofing (BN/Novice) - Instructor Brenda Finnicum                               *** Full ***
        For those interested in competition, trialing or preparing to do so. Will cover aspects of proofing  - categories, when to proof, being fair, when to reward and when to wait, proofing games.                            


Agility

These classes are for Club members.  Register with Linda Pacioretty, 508 White Church Rd. Brooktondale, NY 14817.

6:30 P.M.   Skills and Drills - Instructor Brenda Finnicum                                     *** Full ***

           A course will be set up on which people can practice, one at a time; no formal instruction. For dogs/handlers at all levels of agility training. Participants are expected to help with set-up and tear-down.

Sundays - March 12, 19, 26; April 2, 9
 
2:00 P.M.  Open Agility Practice - Supervised by Susan Morse                        Max 7 students
        For members that have completed Agility 1 or higher. Practice on your own, taking turns. On weeks that the class is not full, drop-ins will be accepted at $5 per week.


Please note that IDTC is unable to accept aggressive or reactive dogs in our classes.  If you are concerned that your dog is aggressive or reactive to people or other dogs, please ask for your vet for a referral to a certified animal behaviorist.
