IDTC Beginners Obedience Class

New Beginner Classes Forming in June

What is it?

The Beginners obedience class is a basic program for dogs six months and up (no age is too old) who have not had any previous obedience training.

What is its purpose?

The purpose of the class is to teach your dog the basic obedience commands necessary for him or her to be a good companion and family dog. For those interested in Obedience competition, these commands are also the basis for the AKC Novice routine. The class is primarily directed towards the new inexperienced dog owner who may have many questions about dog behavior and training.

What will you learn?

You will learn how to train your dog. You will be teaching your dog basic obedience commands used both in daily life and in competition, as well as other commands intended just to make living with your dog more enjoyable.

Some of the topics covered are:

Training philosophy
Proper use of the leash, your voice, and other training aids
Getting the dog's attention
Controlled walk
Sit, sit-stay
Down, down-stay
Stand, stand-stay
Come when called
Heeling, with turns, change of pace, automatic sit upon halting
Tricks

What are the requirements?

The dog's immunizations (distemper/hepatitis/leptospirosis/parainfluenza (DHLP), parvovirus, and rabies) must be up to date at the time of the first class - check with your vet about how often the various shots are required.

How much time will it involve?

Classes meet for one hour on a weekday evening, usually Wednesday, and run for 6 weeks. You will be expected to spend ten to fifteen minutes, once or twice a day, working with your dog; most of the dog's learning takes place during these practice sessions.
